Do you ever get mad at yourself for your current habits?
Like… DANG why do you always wait till last minute to do this!
I hate that you are so unorganized!
If only, you would remember where you kept your keys!
Does any of this sound familiar?
Whether it’s the tone or the situation that sounds familiar – let’s focus on the fact that you are judging yourself for your current habits.
Here’s a secret I learned: getting mad at yourself for your habits doesn’t usually create better ones.
So what should you do instead?
Get curious.
Ask yourself why you do that thing.
And the answer isn’t because you’re stupid, slow, and a hot mess.
That’s just more judgment.
I mean, really get curious.
The answers you uncover will help you understand yourself better and create an opening for something new.
Recently, I had been working on my own project stress and I started asking myself questions on why I did things in a certain way – because I noticed it was causing me more stress.
As I asked deeper questions and really got curious… I uncovered that the reason I was creating this project stress for myself was that I was avoiding ANOTHER kind of pain. And this project stress was a more desirable pain than the other one.
WHAT?! I had NO idea I was doing this. If I stayed in judgment I would’ve never uncovered what was really going on underneath my project stress.
This understanding brought me a whole new compassion for myself, an opportunity to nurture those parts of me that were hurting, and ultimately shift my project stress! That is the power of practicing curiosity vs. judgment!
